Ride the Cyclone Roller Coaster π’
Some would argue all adventurous days in Coney Island should start with a heart-pounding ride on the Cyclone roller coaster. This emblem of Coney Island’s amusement park, Luna Park, delivers an unforgettable adrenaline rush with its thrilling twists and turns.
The Cyclone was open to the public in 1927 and quickly became one of the most popular and iconic attractions in Coney Island to this day. It was designed by Vernon Keenan and operated for over four decades before beginning to deteriorate in the early 1970s.
at its opening, it was the world’s tallest roller coaster, standing at 85 feet tall and reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Known for its steep drops and sharp turns, the Cyclone has survived numerous attempts to shut it down and remains a beloved symbol of Coney Island’s vibrant past, now recognized as a New York City designated landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city planned to scrap it, however, Dewey and Jerome Albert, owners of the adjacent Astroland amusement park, struck a deal with New York City to operate the ride. The coaster was refurbished and reopened in 1975. The Cyclone was declared a New York City designated landmark in 1988 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. After Astroland closed in 2008, the coaster was operated under a lease agreement with the city until Luna Park took over in 2011. The Cyclone represents a key part of the history of Coney Island, which was the largest amusement park in the United States from the 1880s to World War II.

Take a spin on Denoβs Wonder Wheel π‘
Follow the ride on the Cyclone with another Coney Island icon, with a spin on Denoβs Wonder Wheel, a nostalgic Ferris wheel that provides a panoramic view of the ocean and the entire cityscape of south Brooklyn.
The 150-foot-tall Wonder Wheel at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park was built in 1920, making it another historic attraction for the area. This eccentric Ferris wheel, designed by Charles Hermann (patented in 1920 – US Pat. #1354436) and operated by Herman J. Garms Sr. and his son, Fred, for over six decades, continued to function through the 20th century despite Coney Island’s economic decline. The Wonder Wheel was sold to the Vourderis family in 1983, who restored and continue to operate the ride.

The ride was designated as an official New York City landmark in 1989. In its designation announcement, the Landmarks Preservation Commission wrote about the Wonder Wheel:
“On the basis of a careful consideration of the history, the architecture and other features of this structure, the Landmarks Preservation Commission finds that the Wonder Wheel has a special character, special historical and aesthetic interest and value as part of the development, heritage and cultural characteristics of New York City. The Commission further finds that, among its important qualities, the Wonder Wheel, invented by Charles Herman of New York, was manufactured and built in 1918-20 as a unique variant of the famous Ferris Wheel of the Columbian Exposition of 1893; that it affords panoramic views of Brooklyn and itself is an important feature of that borough’s skyline; that the Wonder Wheel has been featured in a variety of media and has become a well-recognized symbol of Coney Island, a recreational retreat New Yorkers have enjoyed for over a century and a half; that its popularity and exemplary safety record throughout its sixty-nine years have encouraged approximately thirty million pleasure seekers to ride it.” – David M. Breiner, NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, May 23, 1989 π
As the oldest continuous operating ride at Coney Island, the Wonder Wheel has a strong safety record and has never experienced any significant incidents. The Wonder Wheel has also influenced culture, featuring in numerous TV shows and films, and inspiring replicas like Pixar Pal-A-Round at Disney California Adventure.

Enjoy a hot dog at Nathanβs Famous π
Getting a hot dog at Nathanβs Famous is a must for any Coney Island visit. There are 2 locations to choose from, the main one is right across Stillwell Avenue Station. Queues on the weekend can be VERY long, so come with some patience, then stroll along the Coney Island Boardwalk after your meal while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker started the historic institution in 1916. He initially worked in Feltman’s kitchen, renowned for its hot dogs, but believed he could improve them using his wife Ida’s spice recipe. They invested their life savings of $300 in a hot dog stand at Surf and Stillwell Avenues, selling hot dogs half the price of Feltman’s (5 cents). To convince hesitant customers, they hired people dressed as doctors to eat the hot dogs publicly, turning Nathan’s Famous into a Coney Island staple. From the 1950s, the business expanded beyond Coney Island, introduced a logo featuring Nathan, and started supermarket sales. In the 1960s, Nathan’s Famous went public, began national distribution, and later expanded internationally in the 1980s. The company now operates over 300 units in 30 states and 17 countries. Nathan’s Famous also hosts an annual International Hot Dog Eating Contest every Fourth of July since 1972. The company remains an iconic representation of culinary Americana, serving millions of customers every year. Though Nathan passed away in 1974, his legacy persists in each hot dog served.

Watch a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game βΎοΈ
A visit to MCU Park to watch a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game is a must for sports enthusiasts. The Cyclones find their home in MCU Park, the first professional baseball stadium in Brooklyn since the iconic Ebbets Field was torn down in 1960. This park carries its own unique charm and historical significance as it proudly stands on the site of the former Steeplechase Park, a cornerstone of the Coney Island Amusement Industry until its closure in 1964. MCU Park even boasts the longest distance between home plate and center field in the New York-Penn League, impressively surpassing the distance in 26 Major League ballparks, including CitiField and Yankee Stadium. The Cyclones have proven their popularity by ranking in the top 10 in Minor League Baseball attendance multiple times, a feat no other Short-Season team has achieved. The Cyclones’ commitment to providing a welcoming and engaging atmosphere is also evident in their decision to replace one of the bleacher sections with a picnic area named βThe Backyardβ. Visit the historic Childs Restaurant building π°
A trip to Coney Island without visiting the historic Childs Restaurant Building is like a hot dog without mustard. Once upon a time, in the early 1900s, this Spanish Colonial Revival gem was a bustling dining venue – now it’s an architectural spectacle and a symbol of Coney Island’s gilded past. Although you can’t pop in for a clam chowder and grilled cheese anymore, you can still marvel at the enchanting terracotta sea creatures adorning its facade. Pop a pose in front of it for some Instagram glory – because, if you didn’t snap it, did it even happen?

Participate in a beach clean-up π§€
Join the Beautify Brooklyn Initiative π§Ήπ Combine social responsibility and environmental activism with a relaxing day at the beach by participating in a local beach clean-up initiative. Brooklyn-based non-profit, Beautify Brooklyn, invites volunteers to not only tidy up our beloved Coney Island Beach, but also transform the trash into unique art projects on April 8th. Learn about the harm of beach litter while contributing positively to our environment and marine life. Founder Robert Elstein emphasizes the immense impact volunteers can have in protecting our oceans, especially from the invasion of hard plastics. Wondering what happens to the collected waste? Well, the event includes a fun art session after the clean-up. With ocean-smoothed trash, participants can create beautiful Flotsamals – mobiles crafted from driftwood basis and unique collections of found plastics, shells, and corals. This is not just about cleaning β it`s about creating, networking, sharing, and valuing our beautiful environment. Don’t miss an opportunity to leave a lasting impact on Brooklyn’s beachscape.
